On the way home from school on Earth Day my little environmentalist said, "Mom, when we get home we need to put on some rubber gloves and get a trash bag and walk around our neighborhood and pick up trash to help the Earth." Although I was tired and had a million other things to do, how do you say no to that? So we put SpiderPig in her stroller, put WalMart bags on our hands (we had no rubber gloves), and walked around our neighborhood picking up trash....it was nice...I am glad he suggested it.
Of course, my son who is having more and more of his outgoing days and less and less shy days saw one of our neighbors outside and struck up a conversation. He proceeded to tell her that we had to go around and pick up all of the trash "in our community" because "our neighbors just throw their trash out everywhere and litter and that is not good for the Earth." Luckily, this particular neighbor found him humorous and laughed and said, "that is very nice of you."
